Press Release Ashford MP Welcomes Government’s £1.5 Billion Boost to Fix Roads

This week’s Budget included a record investment to repair roads and tackle potholes, with £1.5 billion allocated to the South East.

Councils across England will be able to fix existing potholes and prevent new ones thanks to a doubling of roads funding by the end of the Parliament. Each local authority will receive a share of the £7.3 billion national allocation, enabling them to target the roads most in need of repair and deliver immediate improvements for local communities.

Kent will receive £274,036,000 in total for the rest of the Spending Review period — comprising a £199,664,000 baseline allocation and a £74,372,000 incentive allocation.

To ensure taxpayers’ money is well-spent, the Government is also increasing accountability measures. The proportion of local roads funding tied to transparency requirements will rise from 8% to over 30% — more than £500 million. Councils will only be able to access this funding if they publish clear pothole and maintenance data and follow best practice.

Sojan Joseph MP said:

“Fixing our roads is a huge issue for many of my constituents. I receive a large number of emails and letters about the condition of our roads, and I have met frequently with Ministers to raise these concerns. I am pleased that the Government has listened and responded with this record funding allocation.

I urge Kent County Council to make the most of this investment from this Labour Government and get our roads in Kent repaired.”
